SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — In a Dec. 31 story about the release from prison of Sara Jane Moore, who attempted to kill President Ford in 1975, The Associated Press reported erroneously that she was involved with the Symbionese Liberation Army. Moore was involved with leftist political causes in the Bay area at the time, but her former defense attorney, Frank Bell, said he knew of no connection between Moore and the SLA.

I found this information on a new book I was reading “Hearst to Hughes” by Donald P . Lunde, a forensic psychiatrist who was a consultant to the court in the 1975 Hearst trial. Judge Carter died of a heart attack shortly after the guilty plea. The same link above is http://presslord.com/Lunde.html
The point is somewhat moot since it went to a full trial but Judge Carter was supposed to be aware of Patricia Hearst's cooperation n the investigation of the Crocker Bank robbery investigation which resulted in the death of Myrna Opsahl.
Another irony is that in that in late 1999 Kathleen Ann Soliah/Sara Jane Olson-Peterson was offered a sentence of less than two additional months jail time served if she would have pleaded guilty in the Los Angeles pipebimb conspiracy charges. If this were to occur the prosecution of the Opsahl murder would have probably started in late 1999 when it lacked “momentum”. As it stands now Soliah/Olson-Peterson is likely to serve at least nine years of total time behind bars. Of this three (assuming half time served) will be for the Opsahl murder and around six years for the Los Angeles pipe bomb conspiracy.

An excellent new review of the movie “Patty Hearst”. I have a copy of the Region 2 DVD. It seems to be exactly the same as the VHS so not worth the cost or effort. If you want to buy a copy of “Patty Hearst” or the documentary “Guerrilla, the taking of Patty Hearst” try this half.com link.
The movie correctly stated that “Patty Hearst” was a box office failure. This despite the Cannes nomination and the New York Times calling it “one of the ten best movies of 1988. I have linked dozens of reviews of “Patty Hearst” in Soliah.com in the last eight and a half years. Many links should still be live. I found a pattern where the “A list” movie critics like Siskel and Eberts gave it good reviews. The “B-list” and “C-list” critics tended to give it negative reviews. These reviews seemed be more about the “politics” of the movie, as perceived by the reviews than the actual movie itself. Typically, these reviews started writing with the “alternative” publications and were hired by newspapers and magazine in an effort to be modern and “hip”. The SLA made the “baby boomer “left” look bad.
Also in 1988 the economy and the US were doing well. Interest rates had held to single digit levels for a few years and we were digging out of the 1987 stock market crisis. Few people wanted to dwell on the 1970's at the time.
I try to watch the movie “Patty Hearst” two or three times a year. I notice new things every time I watch it.

The judges ruling is a tactical victory for the “Flying Imans” but the wide scope of the charges allowed by the judge allows for a very wide scope of “discovery”. Discovery is a “two way street”. For example some of the Imans wer involved with a large Arizona mosque with strong connections to 9-11 highjackers.
It should be interesting to see how this plays out.

This seems a local version of the work of Frank Bender who did the “bust” (head sculpture) of the SLA's James Kilgore. The Kilgore bust wasn't that realistic but the Frank Bender update on John List was remarkably accurate. With Kilgore, the problem was the “psychological profile”. Kilgore's occuapation at the time of the disappearance was a “house painter” but he was a college graduate Economist who graduated with honors. The list “bust” assumed blue collar work when Kilgore was a “desk jockey”.

Several points here. Arthur Bremer, who shot and paralyzed George Wallace during his run for president was just released from prison. This immediately made me wonder if Sara Jane Moore was up for release, apparently she is this January. 11-14-07#2 To readers, sorry about not posting lately. Ten days ago I started early retirement after 33 years of Civil Service. The “dust” hasn't settled yet. I deferred a lot of projects over the years, especially with home repair and upkeep. Interesting recap of story that I have been following. The article mentioned that no journalists in the US has been murdered in the US in the last 30 years when covering a story. The Los Angeles pipe bomb guilty plea was soon followed by the famous “flip flop” attempt to reverse the plea. It was unsuccessful. Ironically, the next high profile attempt to flip-flop” reverse a guilty plea was Senator Larry “Brokeback Bathroom” Craig after his his arrest for bathroom cruising at the Minneapolis/St. Paul Minnesota airport. That plea reversal lost in the first round and his now headed to the Minnesota Court of Appeals where I expect it to also lose.

I recalled the news. I had work that night and flipped on th KSTP-TV 11AM news before planning to get some sleep. By then the crash was reported and Wellstone was “presumed dead”. The tragic crash happened on the landing approach, visible from the airport with a large fire that made it apparent that there were no survivors. That was the only turbo-prop expected at that airport so it was pretty definite by 11AM. I flipped channels and it was everywhere by 11AM. Umm! This is funny with an object lesson. Last week Air America host Randi Rhodes (any relation to Cecil?) tripped and fell while walking her dog. She called in sick and her substitute opine on the air that it may have been a plot of the “right wing conspiracy” to silence Air America. Perhaps the sub didn't figure that Air America is bankrupt because it' ratings are so bad that they redefine “laughingstock”.
This is somewhat like the mentality of the far left after 1970. They had to retrench and “lay low” because the FBI and CIA were watching them because they were “so important”. If they decided that they weren't being surveillance it would mean their efforts were not important enough for government effort. The running lefty joke after the Freedom of Information act was posted was that the “small fear” you would discover that you had an FBI file. The big fear is finding out you didn't rate one.

No surprise in this ruling by my hometown court. Money quote: “But Porter wrote, "The defendant, a career politician with a college education, is of, at least, above-average intelligence. He knew what he was saying, reading and signing."”
This is the highest profile attempt to rescind a guilty plea since the Soliah/Olson “flip flop”.

First off, notice “Sara” with no “h”. Only 25% of the Sara(h) lack the “h”. I have heard from or about quite a number of women who were mistaken for Hearst and temporarily detained by the police. It demonstrates the high profile of the case at the time and the efforts police made in finding Hearst and other SLA fugitives.

If we assume it is a "lockbox" until age 18 the next question is what it could be used for. Savings bonds currently purchased can be used with no tax on the interst for education of the person or dependent children for defined educational expenses. Hillary Clinton also suggested it "might" be used for a home down payment. There is no current tax exempt provision for that savings bond now purchased and used for a future house so a new law would be needed there. That would be dicey to try to regulate (what if some wanted to used the money to start or buy a business. Probably the best they could do is have the interest tax free id used for tuition at post secondary schools where the students are eleigle for government insured student loans. This is basically the criteria for recent savings bonds used for education.
Otherwise the person would likely be tax on the interest (or perhaps it all) if they took the money out for something other than tuition.
The "Vietnam era" far left protest movement was funded in large by "trust fund babies". Some well meaning relative but a kid in the will with the provision that they couldn't get access to the money before age 18. Let' just say the "activists" of the day tended to "wine and dine" the "trust fund baby" who was now over eighteen and $5,000 in an account they could now access. (multiply by four or five to get todays value.)

Very frightening! I strongly suggest you check out the links on this powerlinebog.com story that I first saw on the antistrib.com A group of people had apparently peacefully gathered and and apparently were brutalized by the police. We aren't yet there in the US but this incident is worth pondering. Elected officials refuse to discuss Islamic immigration to the US and no one in the mainstream media seems to question this. In Belgium, civil service is the most secure job and it looks like the police and bureaucrats think first of their job security. I know the feeling. In five weeks I will be retiring from Civil Service after 33 years. For me it can't be derailed but in Civil service you tend to think of your job security and your pension. I never had to compromise my principles but it is a sword hanging over your head. To think that free speech can be suppressed because is “angers Islam” is extremely frightening. In studying the SLA I have seen how a low of the anti-war-communist-socialist techniques are being recycled. So far without a lot of success but “eternal vigalence is the price of democracy”.

Hmm! The first I have heard of actual use an airplane by an SLA fugitive. I'll have to check around on who this could be and when. The abandoned SLA safehouse in San Francisco had contained flight manuals and the SLA occupants used the “cover” of pilots and flight attendants. I don't recall Bill Harris or theothers going to Washington state. Kathleen Soliah was in Seattle as actress “Nancy Bennet”. James Kilgore and usually Micheal Borton were with her.
I'll try to track the story down. Here is the key quote: “While assigned to an Indian Reservation in the State of Washington as an FBI agent, I received information that a dangerous fugitive, a member of the Symbionese Liberation Army, was en route to the reservation. Members of various law enforcement agencies met to formulate plans to locate and arrest the fugitive.
At this meeting one senior officer forcefully presented a plan of action and quickly received an endorsement from the group. The plan was simple, stake out the three major access roads into the reservation and wait.
The plan was immediately implemented, but three days later word arrived that the fugitive had visited the reservation, obtained money and guns, and returned to California. How? The group had failed to consider travel by air. The fugitive rented a small plane in northern California and had flown to the reservation undetected while we watched the roads”

This is the second time this has happened in the last few months and the mainstream media silence is “deafening” in both cases. If the far right kook goes on a rampage the mainstream media is totally on top of it. That's fine with me so long as they apply the same standards to the left wing “kooks”. The Star Tribune for example, apparently found it “irrelevant” that Soliah/Olson-Peterson joined up with a group that had assassinated a popular black leader Marcus Foster
and was alleged to be a ringleader “calling out the seconds” in a bank robbery where a mother of four depositing church collections Myrna Opsahl was murder by the bank robbery team Soliah/Olson-Peterson was directing. She eventually plead guilty and admitted to the crime. Then the mainstream media reported it.

A few years later I read, and I believe reported on Soliah.com an editorial from a writer of the “Lone Gunman” noting the WTC plane hijacking and effort to fly the plane into the World Trade Center. (they veered away at the last moment on “The Lone Gunman”. Even later I reported here on the case of Samuel Byke attempting to hijack an airline and force the pilot to fly it into the ground. (the effort was stopped on the ground with one pilot killed, another seriously injured and Byke killed). This occurred around the time of the Hearst kidnapping. At an early safe houses in San Francisco the SLA members used flight attendant/Stewardess and pilot job descriptions and uniforms. Flight manuals were found there after the SLA abandoned the site. The Federal authorities commissioned a “think tank” that speculated that the SLA might hijack an airplane and fly it into the White House or Pentagon or some high profile West Coast Target. Essentailly, the fed “think tank” envisioned a potential “9-11” by the SLA in the mid 1970's.

To coin a term Senator Craig is “trying to pull a Soliah”. Those following the Soliah/Olson-Peterson saga should easily recall the “flip-flop” attempt by Soliah/Olson-Peterson to rescind her Los Angeles guilty plea. The effort failed as did subsequent appeals. I saw the media trucks at the Hennepin County Government Center today and figured it was the Senator Craig hearing.
In Minnesota I would give this virtually no chance to succeed. A lot of legal analysis on the the Craig case borders on the hilarious. Senator Craig claimed that he did no consult a lawyer. The original “bathroom” incident occurred on June 11 and Craig plead guilty on August 01, a gap of almost six weeks. After yet another five weeks he wants to undo his guilty plea. That's plenty of time to rescind a plea or consult a lawyer, who is bound by lawyer-client confidentially. Senator Craig has a constitution right not to be detained when congress is in session but it would seem that it would be his responsibility to involve a right. The case of him making a plea to several misdemeanors without physically being in the courtroom is common. It's a bit different but Soliah/Olson-Peterson was not required to attend most of the procedural hearings in California during the Los Angeles prosecution.
Neither Senator Craig of Solaih/Olson-Peterson were put under oath. If they had been they could have potentially been subject to cross-examination. In the case of Senator Craig this probably would have been about allegations of a pattern of gay cruising. In th case of Soliah/Olson-Peterson this would have concerned the Crocker Bank robbery and the murder of Myrna Opsahl.
In the case of Senator Craig the factor in his “re decision” was the information on his citation showing up in the media. It was always public information. The local medai have obtained the names of the other 39 men given citations in this “bathroom” sting. They haven't released them but they could if they wanted to.
A “gay gotcha” is necessarily effective. Mike Hatch, a candidate for Minnesota Governor had one past hours parking ticket at an area the police consider a gay cruising area. That backfired on Hatch's primary opponent Matt Entenza who was accused of using his wealth to make extremely extensive background checks against his opponents. Entenza had some flaws in his explanation of the parking ticket search. Entenza withdrew from the race because of this.

I sort of figured out that I do not have a general interest/political blog to rant on political stuff. What is notable is the John Edwards proposal is mandatorty medical visits, apparent including “mental health”. First off, the old saying goes “You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink.”. Edwards failed to explain would happen beyond the mandatory visit. This reminds me of the probation officer where you have to do things to keep the probation officer happy to keep from getting thrown in back in jail. The difference is that John Edwards proposes this for people who have committed no crimes.
I don't expect criminal penalties but instead for the middle class types who have investments and savings, financial penalties for not following the “doctor's orders”. Ironically, this would hurt those who are sucessful since they tend to have the assets that can be tapped. There are test for many things like alcohol consumption and cholesterol. Should people who have broken no laws be subjected to this? Apparently thinks so. Edwards penalties on this “Nanny state on steroids” qill be civil financial against the middle class who have assets.
What is more scary is that Edwards also proposes mandatory mental health evaluations. Totalitarian and communist regimes have long used the mental health system to stifle dissent. We will probably not have much institutionalization under Edward's scheme but instead civil penalties, basically stripping dissenters of their assets which they had legally acquired and are saving for their retirement. Financially, Edward “total insurance” scheme seems financially unsustainable so it would seem the likely revenue source is the middle class with savings, probably for retirement that could be taken if the person does not comply with “doctor's orders” after the mandatory medical visits proposed by John Edwards.

There was a link to the parades website which cited Keith Ellison so it seemed to qualify as an “official” source.
Monitoring news using google news is not exactly “rocket science”. It truly amazing, and ti strains credibility to think that the office of Congressman Keith X Hakeem Ellison can't figure out google news. I sent the news of the parade to the other local conservative “big blogs” but none took it up. Now it seems that this 20 year parade announced that Representative Kieth Ellison would lead it without a solid commitment from Ellison.
Several points here. The parade is more than a week away so the story can wait a few days. Also, Keith Ellison's office has had a long history of not returning calls for verification of negative information. As an example, when Kieth Ellison gave a “closed door” speech to I think a CAIR gathering it was on the event website, not on Ellsion's website and his staff did not return call for verification.

I'll go with the canadafeepress.com on this. They relied on information from a 20 year institution. With the growth of the Internet and the need for greater efficiency in news gathering these “official” websites should be “official”. Islamic organizations have often been, to put it politely, been very “sloppy” in their “PR”. I will cite the recent court filing by CAIR where Powerlineblog pointed out they cited a newspaper article on their membership decline as “evidence” that being publicly named a “unindicted co-conspirator” was hurting their membership and fund raising. The problem was that CAIR denied the funding/membership drop and condemned the same article as “lies” and “smears”. Also, the same article in powerlineblog.com pointed out that the “alleged”declines described in the article happened before CAIR was cited as an unidicted co-conspirator. It was hilarious. These Muslims needed to get there PR act together if they want to be taken seriously in the age of blogger analysis.

First off, I chose the Fox News link because they tend to be a perma-link. The story is straight off the wire. My view is that when anyone tries to disrupt the political process you attempted or successful assassination we should, at the least, “lock them up and throw away the key”. This happened with Sirhan Sirhan, the convicted assassin of of Robert Kennedy during a presidential campaign.
By contrast, the would be assassin of Ronald Reagan (I can't remember the name right now) get's weekend passes to go home. They put “Squeaky Fromme” in “Camp Cupcake” where Martha Steward served time and “Squeaky left the unsecured facility to go see Charles Manson. Sara Jane Moore, an SLA wannabe, will soon be up for parole. Soliah/Olson-Peterson chose the fugitive name “Sara Jane”. It appears to be in homage to convicted presidential assassination attempter, Sara Jane Moore another Symbionese Liberation Army “associate/wannabe” On the 20/20 TV show Soliah/Olson-Peterson claimed that she got the idea for “Sara Jane” from a Bob Dylan song “Sarah Jane”. I found this information on a new book I was reading “Hearst to Hughes” by Donald P . Lunde, a forensic psychiatrist who was a consultant to the court in the 1975 Hearst trial. Judge Carter died of a heart attack shortly after the guilty plea. The same link above is http://presslord.com/Lunde.html
The point is somewhat moot since it went to a full trial but Judge Carter was supposed to be aware of Patricia Hearst's cooperation n the investigation of the Crocker Bank robbery investigation which resulted in the death of Myrna Opsahl.
Another irony is that in that in late 1999 Kathleen Ann Soliah/Sara Jane Olson-Peterson was offered a sentence of less than two additional months jail time served if she would have pleaded guilty in the Los Angeles pipebimb conspiracy charges. If this were to occur the prosecution of the Opsahl murder would have probably started in late 1999 when it lacked “momentum”. As it stands now Soliah/Olson-Peterson is likely to serve at least nine years of total time behind bars. Of this three (assuming half time served) will be for the Opsahl murder and around six years for the Los Angeles pipe bomb conspiracy.

I was watching the show Saturday night. One section is on the very extensive collection of guns that the Los Angeles police have for reference and kept for their historical value (IE: A shotgun used by John Dillinger). At the time of the SLA shootout the police, even swat teams, were not allowed to carry automatic weapons. According to this show the police borrowed some automatic rifles for the collection to even up the fight with the Symbionese Liberation Army, which had automatic weapons.

I read the book “Zebra” and did other research wondering if the Zebra murders were retaliation for the assassination of Marcus Foster by the SLA. It turned out that the start of the Zebra murders preceded the Marcus Foster assassination but the “dots were not connected” on the Zebra murders until after the Marcus Foster assassination. This is not unusal with serial killers. It often takes time to establish a pattern.

Basically, when Colson Westbrook started the BCA at Vacville prison it was basically a “chalk talk” program with some perks and status for the prisoners involved in it. It would have been forgettable if the future SLA members had not taken in the escaped Donald De Freeze when no one else wanted to deal with him. The infamy came from “backtracking” after the SLA grabbed the headlines. Below is the story “money quote”.

A bit of “comic relief”. I recommend following the “anti-strib” since they stay on top of the faults of the Minneapolis Star Tribune newspaper so I don't have to. A good day to check is the un-PC “Hot chick Friday”. I talked to someone who was a Sierra Club solicitor and they claimed that you could keep 75% of the money that was solicited. They said that they would go to the “upscale” urban neighborhoods during the day and hit the upscale suburbs at night. The person said they would travel five or six per car (capacity). It seemed that all of these activist/soliciters <sic!> smoked cigarettes. He smoked but thought it “odd” for a group seeking a pristine environment. A fair question to ask of a solicitor for a non-profit is what their pay or percentage is. If they lie this can be used against the employee agency.
My information is several years old and may not reflect current policy. Sierra Club has a non profit status so they need to answer this question if asked. If true, the Sierra Club soliciting might be the way a lot of lefty activist/protester types make a living.

The confirmed Zodiac killings occurred in 1968 and 1969. According to the Wikipedia Entry of the Zodiac Killer “The Chronicle received another letter postmarked February 14, 1974, informing the editor that the initials for the Symbionese Liberation Army spelled out an Old Norse word meaning "kill." (slay) However, the handwriting was not authenticated as the Zodiac's.
There is a cottage industry of sorts on the still unsolved Zodiac Killer cases. I have read about the case enough to know the basics. The prime suspect is Arthur Leigh Allen
who was apparently cleared in a DNA test in 2002. I occasionally hear from people who claim that Kathleen Ann Soliah/Sara Jane Olson/Peterson then boyfriend James Kilgore is a suspect as the Zodiac. The main reason is that Kilgore was supposed to have a near “savant” ability in math calculations, something that could be useful in cryptography. Appearance wise, James Kilgore was quite different in appearance. When the 2002 DNA test on Allen came out I contacted a number of law enforcement contacts I had suggesting they compare the DNA from the stamp with James Kilgore's, who was then in federal prison where this would be easy. I doubt that there would be a match if a test were done. It's a very long shot.
After the San Francisco bay area had been terrorized by Zodiac it was, a few years later terrorized by the “Zebra Killers” and the SLA. (at the same time).
I'm hit pause 75% through the movie to write this. For those interested in the SLA it's worth renting (especially at MCDonald's http://redbox.com for $1). It gives a good “feel” for San Francisco of the era. It seems to do especially well at capturing the communications technology of the era. In one scene different police agencies were trying to figure out how to exchange information and most didn't even have a fax machine. There were of course no cell phones and Al Gore had not yet “helped create” the Internet. <grin!>
Zodiac is well worth the rental. It's very watchable and it gives a sense of of the era.

For a trivia note Coleen Rowley, then with the FBI was the local FBI spokesperson for both the Cunanen case and the Soliah/Olson cases. The media people I talked with were universally unhappy with the amount of information Coleen Rowley would divulge to them in both cases. This helped open many media “doors” for me.

The League became a joke to many, but others wondered why it was out trying to define the mafia out of existence and began to suspect that it was in fact little more than a front for the criminals whose very existence it denied. At the same time, many respected Italian-Americans began speaking up to say one could be proud of his or her heritage without having to deny that there are bad elements in any large group of people and that it was the obligation of those proud of their heritage to not only honor it, but to denounce those who would besmirch it. Eventually the League's leaders realized the foolishness of the position they had taken, abandoned it and went on to do much good. The controversy didn’t last all that long, but it was both interesting and instructive. CAIR likes to characterize itself as the leading Muslim civil rights organization in this country and your leaders are quick to criticize anyone who in your eyes is “anti-Muslim.” |

The weapons they describe are, domestically a lot like the weapons used against our heavily armored troops in the Mideast (hmmm!!!!)
