In one 2000 fundraiser speech, Ellison makes reference to the prosecution of Malcolm X's daughter, Qubilah Shabazz, as retribution against Farrakhan. He also spoke about the "political" prosecutions of a former Black Panther activist convicted of killing a New Jersey police officer.

Shades of the SLA! The Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) declared war on the USA and had no strong affiliation to San Francisco radical groups prior to their inception. The SLA's attempted foreign ideology appeared to be a version of "Maoism" where an eight-grade dropout petty black convict Donald DeFreeze became their "third world leader". They didn't have the internet back then but especially in the Bay area there was an extremely active "alternative press" in the early to mid 1970's. Basically, the million plus national student protests of 1969 and 1970 dwindled to 30,000 nationwide (a 97% drop) by 1971 and basically didn't recover until the "Battle of Seattle in 1999. The hardcore kept pumping out broadsheets, mimeograph handouts, photocopies or other printed material basically claiming that the "protest" movement was still alive and well. It was cheap and and akin to the internet today. It reinforces the views of those who were predisposed to believe. (The SLA had large collections of this printed material at their assorted safehouses.)

Strategy nowadays is to threaten to call the credit card company and ask for a charge back. If charge backs are over one or two percent the credit card companies charge a far higher fee to company. This reminds my of the experience with "Ma Bell" back when the phone company had a monopoly. If you called and said you wanted a black rotary desk phone (basic) the phone rep would demand that you listen to the entire sales pitch for things like "Mickey Mouse phones." (literally). I recall being on the phone more than half an hour because I wouldn't listen to their sales pitch of options.

Representative Martin Sabo has represented Minnesota's fifth congressional district (basically Minneapolis and it's inner ring suburbs.) since 1978 announced in March that he was retiring at the end of this term. The Minnesota DFL (Democratic) party just had it's election and endorsed Keith Ellison as the democratic candidate in the now open fifth district. Ellison was one of Soliah/Olson's staunchest supporters as explained in the Powerlineblog.com article linked above.

Article mentions the song "Sara" (1974) by the group. Sara Jane Moore was a bookkeeper in the 1974 Hearst food giveaway in the spring of 1974. Popeye Jackson appears to have been murdered in the Spring of 1976. The attempt on President Fords life was in September 1975 (shortly after the Hearst/Harris arrests.) Wikipedia on Sara Jane Moore.
Conclusion: The Hall and Oats song "Sara Smiles" does not appear to be about Sara Jane Moore. 75% of Sara(h) have the "h" so that raises suspicion but the timeline is wrong. Always more questions. Was Sara Jane Moore's role in the Hearst food giveaway in the media in 1974 when the song "Sara Smiles" was released.

A couple of angles here. This story is from the Denver Post. I don't have the link handy but the second Symbionese Liberation Army kidnap Target was the family of the head of the Denver Post. They were relocated by the FBI. Next off, the SLA had a death list of more than 100 people they had put "death warrants" out on.
Micheal Borton, who as far as I know is still in prison was part of a planned but never carried out plot to kidnap then US Defense Secretary Robert McNamara (the SLA had plans to kidnap President Ford's daughter.)
Locally, blogger Ed Morrissey of "Captains Quarter" was the first to instigate the campaign that resulted in Canada's liberal government being recently voted out of office and replaced by a more conservative government. This new government seems serious about cracking down on terrorist threats.

For a brief historical reminder, Henry Wallace was the Vice President under Franklin D. Roosevelt during the first two terms. At the democratic convention where Roosevelt was nominated for a third term, Wallace was removed and replace as VP candidate by Harry Truman. Roosevelt died in office not long into his third term and Truman, not Wallace became president.
It's typically noted that Hubert Humphrey, as mayor of Minneapolis drove the communists out of the local unions and the local democratic party establishment. This Powerlineblog.com posting and the source column help to flesh this out.
The Soliah/Olson link is tenious but it may have helped explain the often "intense support" for Soliah/Olson shortly after the June 1999 arrest. This support had "width" in the sense that it was initially strong and intense but it had no "depth" in the form of "staying power" or "traction. Ultimately it backfired for Soliah/Olson Had she given the LA pipe bomb case and early guilty plea she could have received a token sentence of two to six months served. An offer was made to have her turn "states" on the Opsahl murder case but her lawyer "alerted the media" and claimed it to be an example of how her LA case was "weak".
Instead she will be serving time in California prisons until at least sometime in 2010.
BTW: The Kersten column mentions the seminal Time Magazine article "The Good life in Minnesota". (A week before the SLA declaration of war against the USA) It heavily stressed the very high arts funding in Minnesota. That may have influence the Soliah/Olson decision to be a fugitive here (I am researching a Garland Wright-Seattle theory).

Search "Symbionese". Interesting article but I can't figure out the logic in the Unabomber not being a "terrorist". The Unabomber arguably attempted to chill certain opinions and actions with the treat of a mail bomb. Perhaps the logic is that the Unabomber, in acting alone did not have an "organisation". This would seem to be based on conspiracy laws that seem to require two or more people for a conspiracy to take place.
In the case of the Symbionese Liberation Army there was a "death list" against a wide range of people. David Horowitz wrote the Ramparts article condemning the Marcus Foster assassination anonymously because of fear or retaliation.
On C-Span book TV Sunday I was watching an author of a book on the history of domestic terrorism. In 1972 there was a protracted domestic airline highjacking where at one point the highjackers threatened to crash the airplane into the Oak Ridge, TN nuclear complex. Just a guess but but I suspect that there were carbon-pile nuclear reactors without containment buildings (think Chernobyl) at Oak Ridge. President Nixon ordered airport screening.
At the SLA safehouses pilot and flight attendant uniforms and flight manuals were found. A federal think tank speculated that the SLA might highjack an airplane and fly it into the Pentagon, Capital, White House or a high profile West Coast target. More likely the SLA thought the flight attire a good cover and an airplane a means to escape but tyhe US government had developed a scenario very much like 9-11 around the SLA, in 1974.

From the story it looks like Hearst Corporation will basically be a passive "money man" in the deal but St. Paul was where Kathleen Ann Soliah/Sara Jane Olson was arrested in June 1999. As far as I can tell this is the first and only Hearst Corporation newspaper/media presence ever in Minnesota. Hearst Corporation only other local presence is the syndicated gardening show http://www.rebeccasgarden.com filmed in Hudson, Wisconsin which is considered part of the Twin Cities metro area.
This is primarily trivia information but the lack of a Minnesota Hearst presence may help account for the Twin Cites being an SLA fugitive "hideout".

The "cyanide tipped bullet" thing did terrify a lot of people. A theory on the Iraqi "special" small ammo. It could have conceivably been an idea for a "terror" weapon. This small ammo might have contained just enough chemical to perhaps set off the coalition detectors. The chem suits impair fighting capabilities. As I recall, some Eastern European members of the coalition claimed to have detected trace amounts of chemicals but this was dismissed at the time as a "calibration problem".

My father ran a coal powered electric plant but many of his worker went on to run Minnesota's three very successful reactors and they stayed friend when I was growing up. This seems a classic example of what happened with Patricia Hearst immediately after her release. It takes a while to "decompress" after a traumatic event such as a lengthy kidnapping. Typically we have "medical evaluation and debriefing" nowadays to give this window of time to adjust and "decompress". With Patricia Hearst much of the trial focused on her behavior shortly after the arrest. Specifically the "clenched fist" and the response to the question of occupation as "urban guerrilla". Jill Carroll avoided the decompression/debriefing and seemed totally irrational shortly after her release. Same pattern as Hearst.

My speculations on this is based on memory of stories and events more than three years ago so verify the details if you are a media person considering a story or news note. The link above is to an official federal prison system website so that information should be deemed accurate. As I recall James Kilgore received four years in Federal Prison and the feds do not give time off for good behavior. Kilgore was arrested in early November 2002. Typically, with good behavior the feds let the last six months be served in a "halfway house". If so the math is off by only a month. Kilgore also faces a "consecutive" sentence of six years in California prison for the death of Myrna Opsahl. With good behavior the California sentence could potentially be cut in half. This means that Kilgore could potentially be out of the California prison sometime in 2009. The original "guesstimate" for Kilgore's eventual prison release was late 2010. That could potentially still be valid.

A "dumb criminal" story and this is Minnesota but in California the SLA prosecution the provided a reversal of a "Rose Bird (CA Supreme) court" ruling that had previously disallowed using jail phone conversation as evidence. Partially because of the high profile the Soliah/Olson "pipe bomb" case and the SLA/Opsahl murder case there were a large number of rulings that set precedent reversing the "Rose Bird court" rulings.
It is said, "As California goes, so goes the country". The US Supreme Court has two new justices so on a federal level we may see reversals of past court rulings. If you really want to understand this try digging into the California precedents set relating to the modern SLA related prosecutions.

Umm! As far as I can tell no real SLA connection but an interesting fight that has grown into a large media story. Basically a Minnesota State legislator who has been a staunch opponent of putting on the ballot a constitutional amendment defining marriage as a "Union of one man and one woman" was caught on tape claiming that he had spoken to apparently all the Minnesota Supreme Court Justices and claimed that they told him they would rule against gay marriage if the case came before the MN Supreme Court. This "prejudgment/prejudice" strongly violated judicial ethics-101. The chief justice of MN Supreme Court made a rare, perhaps unprecedented conference call to the media claiming that he checked with all present and former MN Supremes and they all denied conversations took place. (I believe our MN Supreme Court)
Anyway, http://www.sandingoffthetruth.com/ seems like a good example on how an ongoing dispute can be detailed and followed via the internet. This one might be fun to watch, the national media has not picked it up yet.

It looks like the renewed Patriot Act contains the original provisions removing the statute of limitations for past terrorist acts. The Symbionese Liberation Army was definitely a terrorist group. On a personal note I just did a $10 recharge a "disposable cell phone" before giving it to a woman friend It suddenly wouldn't receive incoming calls but you could dial out. I had her call the 800 #. She called it and after a lot of "hemming and hawing" they said that the phone was "obsolete" because it it didn't have a "GPS chip" so it couldn't receive incoming calls. They suggested that we take it back to the dealer (A grocery store) for a replacement of the phone and $10 card. I don't plan to do this since girlfriend and I are always borrowing the phone to people to make calls so we will probably keep it for outgoing calls only. It works but it gets complicated and heavy in the pockets. I feel like the a bit like the SLA's "Field Marshal General Teko" who, before prison carried a cell phone in each hand. Cell phones are now used to detonate bomb so this is probably expected. I'll probably use keep recharching the "call out" since I often "borrow" my phone out to people to make calls.
Anyway, here is a good news story. Homeland Security is starting to block incoming phone calls from cell phones without GPS chips.

No SLA connection of any sort but the 1987 World Series win finally convinced me that we could all come together, at least here in Minnesota. I purchased http://searshouse,com in 1986 and experienced a relationship breakup soon after. Later we had a terrifying torrential rainfall. I then realized that the house was on high ground, it suffered only very minor damage. We had a huge stock market drop in 1987 and I feared that our country would again go into an abyss. I recall the nail biting 1987 baseball World Series that mesmerized the Twin Cities. It made me think that things would work out OK. The 1991 World Series, where Kirby Puckett had his finest hour. (In 1991 we had the first Gulf War where are oil supply was again endangered.) Far more exciting than the boring "subway series ""Zenque 777777" (aka Michael Borton) described in emails to me. BTW: Zenque777777/Michaels Borton should be out of prison soon. I'm trying to monitor it.
Anyway, I'll miss Kirby Puckett. I used to run into him occasionally, always pleasant and friendly. I m not much of a baseball fan but I always admired Kirby. Unlike some other professional athletes, he was always friendly and outgoing to the public. Age 45 is too young to die. I've covered this group that protests funeral before. (see below) and I have a legal strategy for countering them in court. The protester's action is extremely repulsive and they have an alleged history of using this tactic to get legal settlements to alleged support their actions. If someone pursues these "_holes" aggressively these their tactics could easily backfire. (note my use of "alleged" for legal cover.) This does have a "chilling affect" on free speech, (No ACLU here to help me.)
Bikers "protesting protesters" is not new. In Berkeley bikers broke through police lines to confront lefty protesters and the American public loved it. The same might happen here with the Patriot Guard Riders.

I first got interested in this when they disrupted a local funeral. One biker, on his own, in cold weather, without legal advice beforehand did what he could do. He rode his Harley down and revved it to downed these creeps out during the funeral of one of local soldiers killed in Iraq. I heard him later on the radio saying "This is wrong". Great guy and it reminded me of how I felt when I decided to take on the Symbionese Liberation Army single handed (Jack Golan and "Soliah in Context also had the same idea and joined the fight.) I thought of the famous quote of Edmund Burke "For evil to flourish only requires that good people do nothing." Well, OK, Marilyn Baker also did it back in the 1970's tracking down the SLA "I wish I had this broads connections"
Legally, these creeps could be put away by using frivolous and harassment lawsuit laws along with creative use of conspiracy and RICO laws with the will and muscle to put this before a jury in a civil suit. They have near zero public approval so go after them! If I can figure out the legal strategy lawyers could. Study the legal strategies used against right wing hate groups. I think that the mainstream media should cover this in spite of the fact that these people actively supported democratic presidential candidates. I get solicitations from hate groups here but I do not reply (and report these to authorities). This contrasts to Cindy Sheehan who welcomed White Supremacists to here "Camp Casey" compound. (DISGUSTING AND RACIST!) To paraphrase "Forrest Gump" "Racist is as racist does!".(The SLA assassinated a popular black leader Marcus Foster, that seems racist to me)
Basically, to put these funeral disrupting creeps away using legal muscle is needed to get their legal cases to a jury. I have a strategy. Any good lawyer should also be able to figure it out. The media should also have these skills but hey, they funeral disruptors supported AL Gore so the mainstream media won't go there. A jury, virtually any jury, could levy damages against them and would. All that is needed is the legal will to get it before a jury. (BTW: the SLA has never faced a jury except for Patricia Hearst and I can deconstruct that trial in my sleep the prosecution points that I believe the prosecution unethically used..) BTW The US Supreme court has repeated ruled against "fighting words" but of course they creeps are allegedly democrats. Lawyers, get off your "behinds".

Two points here. The FBI code name for the Hearst kidnapping was "Hearnap". This use of a "handle" originated with messages sent by telegraph. The story on the end of the telegraph contained this key date: "1974: Launched Westar I, the first U.S. dedicated communications satellite." This satellite was launched in mid April 1974, a month before the Los Angeles SLA shootout. Westar I was basically the first "for hire" satellite that could transmit telephone or television signals as something of a "common carrier". The Los Angeles SLA shootout was the first "spontaneous breaking news event" that was distributed "real time" nationally (and perhaps internationally. In one of the SLA books I read it said that it was seen live on either 60 or 160 TV stations in the US.). This is commonplace now but the LA shootout was the first such event. Video had recently supplanted news film and the relay systems on trucks had recently been introduced. Los Angeles had some of the earliest and most advanced relay and satellite upload equipment. It was one of the largest US cities and Hollywood made it made it a prime location for "remote" broadcasts so all the pieces were in place when the LA shootout happened a month after Westar I was launched.
We can "split hairs" here but the key word is "spontaneous". The 1964 Tokyo Olympics as well as the moon landings were broadcast live via satellite but this require substantial pre-positioning of equipment. Someone mentioned the Munich Olympic terrorism but the satellite equipment was already in place
Technical update: My webhoster has restored all "lost files". This should should be a reminder to everyone to regularly back up their files. It's a horrible feeling to think that you might have lost them. Yesterday I downloaded almost two-hundred WebPages from google.com cache. As for the "Stockholm syndrome" it refers to a usually brief situation where the "victim" tend to retain the affection for the captor long after the captor is removed and is no longer a threat. One of the captives in the original Stockholm event became engaged to marry on of her captors. (I eventually found out that she broke off the engagement before the marriage.)
Hearst, in contrast encountered what Dr. Robert Lifton referred to as "Coercive persuasion with totalism". Basically the victim loses their "attachment" to the captor once they no longer get stimulus from the captor. They, in effect "decompress" but may have residual neurosis.

The Patriot Act provisions not in dispute is the elimination of statute of limitations on past "terrorist" activities. Basically a bomb twenty five years ago now is as prosecutable as it was when it happened. This can lead to pressure by past participants in such activities to "sing or swing" There has not been any significant public outcry when they old lefties "swing". It should be noted that this only involves an extremely small percentage of the "Vietnam Era" protesters. If someone attended protests or committed even a minor egregious act they have nothing to worry about. (IE throwing a brick through a window.) This should apply to only the "big fish " (The SLA declared war on the USA http://home.earthlink.net/~bikemiles/slawar.htm ) The reauthorization of the Patriot act can potentially result in further prosecution of SLA "associates". "sing or swing" There are a lot of SLA crimes not yet prosecuted out there and the Patriot Act, including the undisputed portions provide the stature of limitation exemption. Like said previously "Sing or Swing!" Most notable is the potential involvement of a WHITE SLA "Field Marshal General" in the assassination of Oakland's black school superintendent Marcus Foster.

An interesting "backgrounder" worth studying. 2001 was an anomaly because of the 911 attacks but the pattern of police deaths "in the line of duty" contrasts with the "Hollywood movie" image. I believe that 1995 was the year of the Oklahoma City Bombing so watch for anomalies there. Note that all "Terrorist Attack" deaths occurred in 2001 (9-11 attack). Had the SLA succeeded in killing cops with bombs this would probably be considered a "terrorist attack' but I am not sure. Sometime in early 2006 Tony Serra is supposed to start serving a term of ten months in federal prison for not paying income taxes. Stories were conflicting about weather the tax charges are for infraction only before or also during is time as lawyer to Soliah/Olson. Serra reportedly took the Soliah/Olson case "pro-bono" but incurred a $5000 penalty for releasing personal data that ended up on the old saraolsondefense.org website (the so called "terrorist website" incident.) There were allegedly other legal payout connected with this incident. Serra had vowed to keep his income low enough to not pay taxes. The "terrorist website" incident makes this difficult if not impossible. It should be interesting to see if Serra faces further tax problem. It should be interesting to see when Serra starts his stay in "Club Fed".
