Dondero distinguished Harris v. Superior Court (1977) 19 Cal.3d 786, where the state Supreme Court ruled that it was an abuse of discretion not to appoint Leonard Weinglass and Susan Jordan to represent Emily and William Harris on charges of kidnapping Patricia Hearst.
The high court noted that the two were already representing Emily Harris in a federal firearms case and in a Los Angeles Superior Court robbery case, that those two cases and the Hearst kidnapping case involved many of the same facts, and that Jordan and Weinglass were already familiar with the transcript of Hearst’s trial for having robbed a bank on behalf of the Symbionese Liberation Army, with which the Harrises were affiliated.

Hmm! This story was written on the tenth anniversary of the arrest of Kathleen Ann Soliah/Sara Jane Olson. June 16 was a Wednesday. Hmm!
As I recall the arrest was early AM and it hit the news by noon. (though I didn't find out until midnight) I recall early "Free Sara" public demonstrations (all peaceful). ......The logical place would have been the Ford Bridge but the new Lake Street Bridge was better suited with the wider sidewalks and observation bays.......Every few months I drive across the bridge to check out the protests and give the "single finger salute". I think of the Lake Street protests as a cliche of a lot of "old biddies" "who doth protest too much" but it's been peaceful with minimal public or police costs. Still funny that it was apparently "born from the Symbionese Liberation Army" fugitive arrest.

First the “name game”. Kathleen Ann Soliah in the March 2001 ABC Prime Time interview was asked about the choice of the name “Sara Jane”. Soliah said it was from a Bob Dylan song “Sara(h) Jane with the “h”. According to the US census 75% of Sara(h) have the “h”. Sara Jane Moore was the bookkeeper in SLA food giveaway. In a prison Playboy interview Sara Jane Moore boasted of having a full set of SLA communiques and audio tapes. Moore also boasted in the Playboy interview of knowing people “very close to the SLA”.
The Playboy interview was in issue 270 JUN 1976. A good strategy is to check Ebay for the “Playboy Interviews” CD-Rom. The intro and interviews are pastable to notepad which makes them searchable. Usually cheap on E-Bay and a good resource. I have the CD-Rom and notepad texts somewhere. SEND ME MAILif interested in Moore interview text.
That said, check back, I should have moore (pun intended) here in the next few days on this. That said, I consider Moore then and now to be a kook and a nutcase. A simple test I use is “self reference” and Sara Jane Moore uses it heavily. Moore has long used the “I have secrets that only I know about” as a “teaser” to try to manipulate people.

Definitely NOT Siem -- our Mary Alice definitely was alive in 1973. The name, McDowell, rings a bell and may have been an SLA contact within the CDC. But, offhand I cannot place him. From the story, it sounds like he would have been in jail at the time of Foster/Hearst. In that case, his role would be little more than that of Death Row Jeff.
There were many in the CDC who (post) claimed membership in the SLA, may have known some eventual members. Tom Thompson of the Los Angeles Free Press investigated this angle a lot but lost credibility when he got too close to the Lake Headley crowd. See the Argosy article for this angle.

On that Friday afternoon the media came to the office of Hennepin County Minnesota Adult Social Services where I worked at the time.
This was the last Minnesota job of Camilla Hall, one of the six SLA members killed in the Los Angeles shootout. After work I went to then girlfriend's apartment in Stadium Village (Minneapolis). Girlfriend and roommate were consoling distraught guy. The guy periodically dated Hall until she left for California. Roommate lived with Hall when she move to CA.

Ahemm!, Where do we start here. Marie Claire Magazine is a Hearst publication that did “when mom had a secret“ 2007 story on the Soliah/Olson/Peterson family when Kathleen Ann Soliah was still in prison. BTW: The designated “MILF” age is 30 not 60. The SLA is rife with holiday irony. The sentencing for the Myrna Opsahl occurred on Valentines Day. Soliah/Olson originally plead guilty to the Los Angeles charges on Halloween. Soliah/Olson returned to Minnesota on St. Patrick Day (the same day Natasha Richardson, who had the lead role in the movie “Patty Hearst” had her tragic fatal accident). The mother's day release of James Kilgore seems an especially ironic “swan song” because of conviction for the murder of Myrna Opsahl , a mother of four depositing the church collections in the bank. Also, the pregnant bank teller who miscarried after being kicked in the stomach during the bank robbery where Opsahl was murdered no doubt wanted to be a mother. The Kilgore release on Mother's Day is ironic with a holiday angle.
BTW: Just a reminder. As part of the Opsahl murder sentence plea bargain all defendants agreed not to engage in any book or other media projects for revenue/profit involving the SLA. While the supervised parole is for one year, the unsupervised parole is far longer especially for Soliah/Olson who I believe received “life” for the Los Angeles pipe bombing conspiracy charges.
That said, I have not problem with James Kilgore getting a teaching job so long as it is with his pre-arrest non SLA area of specialty and employment, specifically South Africa and economics (though I tend to disagree with Kilgore's globalism trade views).

I watched and VCR taped the finale episode of “Life on Mars”. Clever ending but not like the DVD code 2 ending of the Britsh version which is the sequel “Ashes to ashes”. Basically, it involves only Sam Tyler having the being the only person actually able to go back and “fix the future”. Could “aircraft carrier airships like the Akron ands Macon have prevented the Pearl Harbor attack and WWII? I often wonder if the “Holocaust” in US urban education if Marcus Albert Foster had not been assassinated by the Symbionese Liberation Army. A question: With virtually all lefties, even in the SF bay area rejected the SLA after the Marcus Foster assassination. Bill (General Field Marshal Teko) Harris, in an audio communique described the assassinated Marcus Albert Foster as “that jive assed (N-word)”. Soliah Olson continued to distribute SLA literature after this.
I can find no example of even the Klu Klux Klan assassinating an elected or appointed public official of the stature of Marcus Albert Foster. “Odd” how the mainstream media found this “not relevant”, especially the Minneapolis Star Tribunes Kurt Brown. I want to carefully note that Soliah/Olson was not involved with the SLA in the Marcus Albert Foster assassination but she was one of the few bay area “lefties” who continued to support the SLA after the Foster assassination.

I don't recall this article but I've read a lot on the SLA. I recall hearing about “MU” but not of the “fantasy fiction” story being like “The Lord of the Rings”. This may help explain the “160,000 year old” nonsense in an SLA communique. What I recall is that in the very late 1969-1970 Cambodian Incursion a lot of publicity was given to the the Ankor Wat Temple complex in Cambodia. In this complex the “NAGA” seven head was prominent.

Based on a British TV series that ran two years and resulted in a sequel that seems successful on Britain. Google Search
Set in 1973, it was pre-SLA, pre 1973 oil embargo/fuel shortages. Set in New York it did have a lot of depictions of the “leftover left” with one episode dealing with the Black Liberation Army “Small but strong”. It also seems to get the technology correct. When it comes out on DVD it will be worth the rent for this interested in this time frame in the US. I have both seasons of the British version on DVD. I have watched a few episodes. It is quite different. It is set in Manchester England in 1973 and they have thick working class British accents. The DVD's are Region 2 which is the standard for Great Britain. (President Obama made a gaffe when he gave the British Prime Minister US region 1 DVD's as a gift!). Hint, there are “hacks” available on line to make US Region 1 DVD players “all region” but it's a “cat and mouse” game with manufacturers modifying the “firmware” when a “hack” is posted. With “hackable” DVD players the older, the better so hold onto that ancient DVD player.

You gotta love on line DVD rentals. It is so “21st Century”! I try Redbox first, preferably the free Monday and Wednesday codes but the Redbox selection is limited.
Working a night shift before I retired in December 2007, I miss the show “24”. I was sort of OD'ing on “24” catch up so I rented DVD's like “Running on Empty”(ROE). It seemed like a cross between the Weather Underground fugitives and 1970 Madison Bombing where Leo Burt is still a fugitive. It was made in 1988, the same year is the classic movie “Patty Hearst”. For starters, I don't believe the Soliah/Olson family knew the extent of the fugitive status (there is the matter of the Zimbabwe passport.). The main theme of ROE is the family constantly on the run. The two parents were involved in a bombing that left a janitor blind and paralyzed. They had two male children who were aware of the fugitive status. In this case it was the father (played by Judd Hirsh) who was the “True Believer”. In this sense it is not really relevant to the SLA. I don't believe Soliah/Olson's family had any idea the “skeleton in the closet” was “SLA”.
That said it is a good movie. Put it on your Netflicks or Blockbuster online list. It will give insight into the “leftover left” mindset of the time and the lefty fugitive lifestyle.

Part of following the laws is umm! Err! Following the law. One might not like the sentencing terms and the constitution alls use to redress grievances but we have to obey the law and remain civil. As for a movie, I recall that part of the Opsahl murder plea bargain was that their be no commercialization aka “movie deals” by the defendants. I no of no current attempt at this but if they occur “Every Secret Thing” will be revealed.

Soliah.com offers its deepest condolences to her family. The linked article noted that her nickname was “Tasha”. That seems an obvious reference to playing Patricia Hearst aka “Tania” in the movie “Patty Hearst”. I certainly hope that this iconic movie classic will finally be released on US DVD. I suspect that it will. I hope they do it right with a lot of extras.
On Turner Movie Classics Movies I heard moderator Robert Osborn (?) describe how Natasha Richardson was blindfolded for days so she get a sense for the role. We love you “Tasha”.
I'm not yet willing to formally endorse the concept of “karma” but Natasha Richardson had her fall, which seemed inconsequential at the time on St. Patrick's Day, the same day that Soliah/Olson was released from prison. Obviously no conspiracy but let's just say Soliah/Olson seems to have a “reverse midas touch”. I have been pushing for years to have the movie “Patty Hearst” get wider distribution on DVD and cable. I suspect this will now occur with great fanfare. Admittedly the company behind the film went bankrupt but you can get “Tanya, sex queen of the SLA” on US DVD. Go figure!

This report seems a bit “sloppy” but it did mention the Marcus Foster assassination. That is pretty much my “gold standard” for balance. The “defense” side tending to use a “boycott” tactic if anything was reported on the “pro-prosecution” side. WCCO-TV reported on both sides despite these risks. It was brave move back then. I would like to commend WCCO News.
Patricia Hearst did initially comment something like “not that again” but the SLA stuff periodically resurfaced and went nowhere. My sources told me that Patricia Hearst very willing to “take it to the wall” if she was called to testify at these trial. With the guilty pleas the trails never happen (the SLA “people” always plead guilty at the last moment to avoid a public trial.) Go figure!

I am pretty sure I spent an evening talking and drinking with James Kilgore in the fall of 1977 on the West Bank of the Mississippi. Nice guy! Very intelligent but he let out that he had never been “west of the Mississippi” when we were on the Minneapolis West Bank. That stuck in my mind. When it got cold we went to the Golden Leaf Bar (now Whiskey Junction) We talked till 1AM bar close. Working the bar close crowd, I found two lovely young ladies willing to join us and the Riverside Perkins. “Kilgore” chickened out citing work in the morning and these two lovely young ladies decline the offer of Perkins with just me. (harumpp!) That may have been critical information stating that Kilgore was here in town and still an “item” with Soliah/Olson.
It seems that Kilgore was checking my website from South Africa. I was offered provisional immunity if I was able to communicate with Kilgore. Hanlon “coincidentally” “just happened” to get an “epiphany” that we had to get a plea bargain now on the Opsahl murder. What a coincidence!
I basically believe that James Kilgore was “thrown under the bus” by Soliah lawyer Stuart Hanlon. One of my deep regrets is that I failed in helping him turn states evidence. I had a lot more to things to post but this story is critically important so it's an exclusive posting today.
These lefty lawyers are “evil”. I googled Kilogre's then (and now) lawyer. This lawyer was defending an HIV positive guy having unprotected sex with teenage girls he met in AOL chat rooms telling them he couldn't transmit AIDS/HIV to them because he was taking his “medications”. Keep in mind this is not James Kilgore but his lefty lawyer.

Her court statement in the Opsahl sentencing seems very “lawyered” (I can be found found on on the extras of the excellent documentary “Guerrilla, the taking of Patty Hearst” I encourage all to rent or buy it, watch the documentary and extras with the statements from the convicted at the Opsahl sentencing (and no! Neither Netflicks or the Hearst Corporation has ever offered me a cent) grrr!

Soliah/Olson defense website was branded a “terrorist website” when it posted personal information including that of former LA police officer John (Jay) Bryan, a survivor of the IHOP bomb attempt who committed suicide after this. As for her lawyer friend Steven Cooper. In Doug Grows column it says that Steven Cooper behind the $840K bail and $25K defense fundwas the former head of the Minnesota Department of Human Rights. Mr. Cooper “have you no shame!”. For starters Soliah/Olson was the only lifeline after the LA shootout. The SLA assassinated a popular and effective black leader Marcus Foster, who was the visionary architect of a plan for urban education which I have put on line. As a child blacks were my friends and protectors. They always looked out for my best interests. In high school I worked in a black neighborhood. This got me into a social work related job at Hennepin County Adult Protection where Camila Hall used to work. Back then the KKK or other white supremacist groups acted (with deep current media drama) in the deep south buts so far as I can tell the KKK never assassinated a popular and effective black leader. Overall a good “primer” article. The talk of SLA association with other domestic and international groups is mostly wild conspiracy speculation. At the beginning the SLA were “coffeehouse revolutionaries” who trashed talked about “revolution”. The support in the Bay Area basically vanished after the SLA assassinated Marcus Foster. They had at most 30 people who still “hung” with the SLA after the Hearst kidnapping. I have communicated with some of them. One of who saw Hearst in the closet and described her as a “scared rabbit”. There were a number of “fifth column” types who distributed SLA literature including Kathleen Ann Soliah/Sara Jane Olson and Sara Jane Moore. Angela Atwood warned that Kathleen Soliah was “too flaky” but Soliah was their only support option after the SLA Los Angeles shootout. It appears that Soliah and here “clan” stored the guns, used in the Myrna Opsahl Murder during the “lost year”
Note the lack of the “h” in both first names, that is found in only 25% of “Sara(h)”). This Sara Jane Moore, the bookkeeper at the SLA food giveaway tried to assassinate President Gerald Ford. In a Playboy interview Ford boasted of having a full collection of SLA tapes and communiques' and of knowing people “close to the SLA. Hmm!

I have long suspected this. Maybe five years ago let us say a “pal” via circumstance I got along with was in a jury on a high profile pedophile priest case that the media covered extensively. They were not sequestered and I was there “computer expert”. They also knew that I had substantial research on priest pedophilia and the cover up (It was big news her in the early 1990's so when it came up nationally a decade later I was well grounded in the subject.) I hadn't told details, just mentioned projects. My “pal” really wanted to ask me but resisted the urge. I was wondering why my “pal” seemed to be standoffish. We cleared things up after jury duty but that showed me the situation.
Basically, the legal system has to adapt. With very high profile cases the “smart” lawyers (yes they exist but to me lawyers are my deterrent to crime) adapt to media publicity with “you might have heard ...... but”.
The higher up the traditional legal “food chain” you go, the less computer/internet/technology sophistication you get. I worked most of my career at a courthouse in IT. The smartest were the dumbest when it came to computers, the INTERNET and technology.

Actually, Jack Scott did hide the fugitive Hearst and Yoshimura in the Catskills near Woodstock, NY but not at “Stew Alberts” house in adjacent Hurley. (Part of the old “Borscht Belt”. Crawdaddy Magazine wrote an “interview” with the fugitive SLA that turned out to be a fake, but Hearst had been very near. Also, the Woodstock/Hurley area had a lot of “alternative” people move there following the Woodstock Music Festival. Especially after the Crawdaddy “interview” which was not considered fake at the time, “Stew Albert” and Woostock/Hurkey would have been logical areas for the FBI to look for Hearst. There were relatively few “alternative enclaves” at the time. Jack Scott moved Hearst and Harris to the Pennsylvania “PAIX” farm on short notice. Word of the “Stew Albert” raid may have gotten out in the Woodstock/Hurley, NY area.

This Christian church is the congregation that Barack Obama and his family attends. The article mentions the active celebration of Kwanzaa which espouses the principles of the Symbionese Liberation Army. This church has what seems like an uncomfortably close relationship with the Nation Of Islam. Recently, Obama's wife Michelle made the comment “For the first time in my adult life being proud of America”. This curious cymicism is close to the attitude common with the Nation Of Islam and Louis Farrakhan. The family of Patricia Hearst is waiting to see how her terrorist kidnappers react to learning that their latest demand won't be met unless she is released unharmed.
Charles Gould, publisher of the Hearst-owned San Francisco Examiner, said Friday that, if Miss Hearst is freed, the Hearst Corp. will meet demands for an additional $4 million to bolster a $2 million free-food program for the needy set up at the kidnappers' insistence.
Gould said $2 million of the new money will be paid "immediately upon her release" and $2 million will be contributed in January, 1975.
Miss Hearst, a 20-year-old sophomore at the University of California at Berkley, was abducted Feb. 4 by members of the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA).
The food program, called People in Need, began Friday with thousands of persons taking groceries, despite some confusion and violence that closed one of four distribution outlets in the San Francisco Bay area.
Gould spoke to reporters after the girl's father, Randolph Hearst, said he could not afford the new demand by the SLA. Hearst is chairman of the Hearst Corp. and editor and president of The Examiner.
To meet the original demand, Hearst put up $500,000 and the family's Hearst Foundation donated $1.5 million.

Lake Headley, a private investigator hired by the families of two other SLA members, further claimed that a year before the kidnapping she had visited a radical black convict, Donald DeFreeze, who later became the SLA's figurehead. Bill Harris, the only surviving member of the kidnap gang, says that Patty's embrace of the group was entirely voluntary and that he and some other SLA members actually opposed it.”
More defense nonsense. The Jack Scott claim when he was a day away from death of cancer. Then Soliah lawyer Susan Jordan made a rather simple error in the request for deposition which the judge caught. Jack Scott was conveniently deceased by the time of the revised deposition which was to be fast-tracked. At the time I wrote about how the time of death in terminal cancer can usually be easily determined. Basically the “Lite” or electrolytes get so out of balance that the organs can't operate and the body basically poisons itself. This is behind those “rush to the hospital” calls with terminal cancer. Inevitably the dying person is totally incoherent in those last dying days or hours. I couldn't find my comments on this immediately but Soliah in Context had a “Grist for the Mill” on this that I found on archive.org. California prisons have detailed and meticulous identification procedures for prison vistors. Indeed Steve Soliah's albi by Emily Tobak was disproved when prison records showed she was at a prison visit when she claimed to be in bed with Steve Soliah. If it was found that Hearst had visited prisoners before her kidnapping it would have been huge news. At most it was hearsay, the quality of which was pretty bad.

The number of incidents has been rising significantly in the last few years. The Symbionese Liberation Army incident in 1974, too, got a lot of attention, and the SWAT team again was criticized, yes?
I'm actually building an exhibit in the museum on that very incident. It happened in May of 1974, when six members of the SLA holed up in a residence on 54th street in South L.A. and needed to be brought to justice for recent crimes, including the Patty Hearst kidnapping, the murder of Oakland school superintendent Marcus Foster, and more recently the robbery of Mel's Sporting Goods in Los Angeles. SWAT and FBI traced them to 1866 E. 54th Street. They were bullhorned 19 times the request to surrender. Then our SWAT team was met with gunfire from within the house. It was a lengthy and televised exchange. The house ultimately burned, and the remains of six people were later discovered. The belief was that the tear gas ignited the fire. The tear gas canisters then burned at a high temperature. Today the tear gas grenades burn at much lower rate.

The entrance fees were raised around 50% a few years back. It will not affect those making a “pilgrimage” as I hope to do someday, but it might deter repeat visitors.
As to the blast there the article states “And more visible. On Feb. 12, 1976, while Patty Hearst was on trial in Los Angeles in connection with her involvement with the Symbionese Liberation Army, a terrorist group called the New World Liberation Front bombed the balcony of one of the guest houses, causing about $1 million in damage.”
There were some reports placing Soliah/Olson in the area and someone who looked like James Kilgore at the site blast just before the explosion. If so, provisions of the Patriot Act override the statute of limitations so this can still be prosecuted. I have heard conflicting claims about weather Soliah and Kilgore were involved. One detail I heard was that the bomber “left a fecal deposit” as a statement. This was apparently cleaned up but such a “fecal deposit” today would be a prime source of usable DNA that would get someone convicted. The evidence cache should be reviewed for DNA evidence with the two prime suspects still in prison. It would become a “dumb criminal” classic if the perp were convicted because they decided to “make a statement” by “pooping”.

“Nyack” refers to the Brinks Robbery in Nyack, (Actually Nanuet) New York carried out in 1981 by members of the Weather Underground and the BLACK Liberation Army. CAN FRANCISCO (AP) — In a Dec. 31 story about the release from prison of Sara Jane Moore, who attempted to kill President Ford in 1975, The Associated Press reported erroneously that she was involved with the Symbionese Liberation Army. Moore was involved with leftist political causes in the Bay area at the time, but her former defense attorney, Frank Bell, said he knew of no connection between Moore and the SLA.

In a Playboy interview Moore boasted that she had a full set of Symbionese Liberation Army audio tapes and communiqués when arrested. In the Playboy interview Moore boasted of knowing people "very close to the SLA". While a fugitive Kathleen Ann Soliah used the alias "Sara Jane Olson. Note that like Moore's first name she used "Sara". I once checked on the Census Bureau and 75% of Sara(h) have the "h" at the end.
